What emotions do women who do topless in NY express?
At first, most of the women who've been in the Topless New York series are a little nervous before the photo shoot - but once they get started, they find it comfortable, freeing, and joyful. Some of them tell me they wish they'd done it earlier.
Why are they getting photographed?
The Topless New York series began because New York is one of the few states in the U.S. where it's legal for women to be topless in public, just like men - but it seemed to me that very few people knew it was legal, and there was no effort to change the law in the other states where it was still a crime to be topless. I thought the best way to spread the word and raise awareness was through photography.
What kind of women do topless and why do they authorize pictures on the internet?
It's been a variety of women - some professional models, some women who have a little bit of modeling experience, and some women who just believe in gender equity and want to be part of something important.
What's a topless photo shoot like?
It's a little bit surreal sometimes, but mostly it's like any other photo shoot - I'm trying to capture the beauty of the woman and her surroundings, while also making an artistic statement and send a message. But a topless photo shoot also comes with some distractions, like people who pass by and ask what's going on or express surprise. In nearly 70 shoots, I've really had very few serious reactions, so it doesn't happen as often as you think, but you still have to be prepared for it.
Can foreign female tourists get topless in NY?
Yes, it's legal for anyone to be topless in public anywhere in New York State, as long as they're not doing it for "commercial purposes." You can't ask people to pay to see you topless, or pay to have their picture taken with you, etc.
Could you tell us about their experiences?
Foreign female tourists?
I don't know about any of their experiences.
